Jenny Mueller

Aspen

Index finger

laid at the lips. Paper lips:
paper face, sand

whisper. Give an old woman a doll
made of aspen. She’ll place it

inside a trembling
doll grove. Say Thank you! and Such

wind today. (But you won’t
really hear her, you

who have always watched out,
as if to see. And she sees you:

one dark regardless stare

in a flimmering wood,
a white cluster outbroken in eyes.)

Jenny Mueller is the author of Bonneville (Elixir Press) and a forthcoming chapbook, Found Land (Slim Princess Holdings).
